"We need to discover harmonies between our own inner states and our surroundings. And no level of development can be maintained if it remains detached from our emotional life. The whole machinery runs down."

The Seminar is intended to be coupled with the Design Studio EM1 and should provide procedural digital support during the next semester. Our course is ment to deliver a comprehensible digital feedback to the ideas generated during sequential design stages and give practical - computational solutions, depending on your specific task. Thus, corresponding to measuring devices and machines - 3d Scanning, Photogrammetry - participants would be ready to find or create their own tools that can analyse, reconstruct, and process complex geometric structures. Afterwards, with established form generation and geometrical rationalisation - digital prototyping would be the next step, focused on the CNC Milling techniques for 1:1 or small unique prototypes.
Introduction to Computing and Programming
During the first part of the seminar we would like to provide students some instruments to give a brief overview of strategies behind digital computing and digital fabrication in architecture. Fundamental principles and crux of computational modeling is a collection of specific methods and techniques that allows us to control, define and observe the geometrical spectrum of hidden physical quantities. Nevertheless, they will not create the core concept or input.
Nowadays we can imagine many possible scenarios of physical form finding or mathematical formalisation. The space of points around us is accessible and by means (of evaluating and) converting renderings of algebraic expressions into visual - spatial dimension it may be computationally transferred into physical field. In our course we would like to experimentally test such approaches. Participants will build up skills and knowledge from very basic algebraic functions, visually represented in parallel with Python (Rhino-Grashopper-Python, Processing) to their own digital design approach according to the individual project requirements.
The second part to be developed in response to the projects...
